What Intelligence Tests Miss
Title : What Intelligence Tests Miss
Author : Keith E. Stanovich
Publisher: Yale University Press
Total pages: 325 pages
Critics of intelligence tests writers such as Robert Sternberg, Howard Gardner, and Daniel Goleman have argued in recent years that these tests neglect important qualities such as emotion, empathy, and interpersonal skills. However, such critiques imply that though intelligence tests may miss certain key noncognitive areas, they encompass most of what is important in the cognitive domain. In this book, Keith E. Stanovich challenges this widely held assumption.Stanovich shows that IQ tests (or their proxies, such as the SAT) are radically incomplete as measures of cognitive functioning. They fail to assess traits that most people associate with good thinking, skills such as judgment and decision making. Such cognitive skills are crucial to real-world behavior, affecting the way we plan, evaluate critical evidence, judge risks and probabilities, and make effective decisions. IQ tests fail to assess these skills of rational thought, even though they are measurable cognitive processes. Rational thought is just as important as intelligence, Stanovich argues, and it should be valued as highly as the abilities currently measured on intelligence tests.

In a warehouse in Santiago, three aging friends meet and await the arrival of a man from their past. Once militant supporters of Salvador Allende, they have grown disillusioned in the three and a half decades since his assassination. Their city has changed under Pinochet, and so have they: heart troubles, thinning hair, a few pounds too many around the waist; there is little left to connect them with their glory days. But now, the three friends have been called together at the behest of the anarchist, Pedro Nolasco, a.k.a. The Shadow, to carry out one final revolutionary gesture. But Lucho, Lolo and Cacho wait in vain; the sudden and gruesome death of The Shadow leaves them without a leader. Now they must turn to Coco Aravena, the most reckless of their former comrades. After years of playing second fiddle, this is the bumbling Coco's chance to show them what he is capable of.

What Your Child Needs to Know About Sex
Title : What Your Child Needs to Know About Sex
Author : Dr. Fred Kaeser
Publisher: Celestial Arts
Total pages: 224 pages
If you start talking early enough, kids will listen. FOR MANY PARENTS, the talk is one of the most dreaded rites of passage in the child-raising experience--but it doesn’t have to be. The key is to start early when talking about sex with your child. In Dr. Fred Kaeser’s progressive approach, parents become their child’s first resource for sexual information (instead of ceding control to peers, the school system, or the media) in order to have a lasting and positive influence over their child’s sexual development. As the former director of health in the New York City public schools, there’s nothing Dr. Kaeser hasn’t been asked by kids, or by parents. And he has seen firsthand the results of our increasingly sexualized youth culture, and how it’s making children grow up faster than ever these days. From sexting to cyberbullying, challenges and pressures abound--even for kids in kindergarten. This means that parents must begin laying the groundwork for basic conversations about sex when their child is as young as three years old. Parents then build their discussions on this early foundation, introducing more information at developmentally appropriate ages (for example, talking about puberty with your eight-year-old, and discussing safe sex with your ten-year-old). What Your Child Needs to Know About Sex (and When) goes far beyond the birds and the bees to discuss uncomfortable issues with a winning frankness and empowering attitude. It offers families the tools they need for navigating how and when to have positive dialogues about sexuality and helps parents learn to use everyday teachable moments. Open communication about sex with your children isn’t necessarily easy, but it can be done; this indispensable book will guide you every step of the way.

- Do you realize that Jesus was the Word of God in the flesh; and that the Old Testament Scriptures were inspired by Him? (John 1:1-14; 2 Tim. 3:16) - Do you realize that the New Covenant was God's Moral Law written on the hearts of believers, and that only the Ceremonial Law, as a middle wall of partition between Jew and Gentile, was fulfilled in Christ as the Lamb of God and therefore done away in Christ? (Compare Heb. 8:10 and Eph. 2:13-16) - Do you realize that a New Covenant believer who walks in the Spirit is fulfilling the righteousness of Moses' Law? (Romans 8:4) - Do you realize that any prophet speaking contrary to God's inspired Word is a false prophet, and therefore Jesus must be interpreted as speaking consistent with God's Word? (Isa. 8:20; Matt. 22:29) - Do you realize the Old Testament Scriptures were the only Scriptures Jesus spoke of and the apostles had at the first? (John 10:35; Luke 24:45; Acts 17:11; 2 Tim. 3:15-17) - Do you realize Malachi foretold that Jesus would come and preach against adulterers and in the same prophecy commanded the people to keep obeying Moses' Law? (Malachi 3:1-5 and 4:4) - Do you realize that everything taught in the New Testament concerning marriage, divorce, and remarriage is consistent with God's moral law? (Romans 7:1; 1 Cor. 7:39) - Do you realize there is no evidence in church history or the Bible that the apostles or early Christians ever denied baptism and membership to converted couples due to divorce and remarriage in their past? - Do you realize the pilgrim church and Anabaptist believers did not deny baptism and church membership to couples with divorce and remarriage in their past? Do you wish to know what the Bible REALLY teaches about divorce and remarriage? ...then carefully read this book with an open and honest heart seeking only for truth!

Seminar paper from the year 2007 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1,3, University of Freiburg (Englisches Seminar), course: The Art of Fiction in 1890s Britain , 10 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: Introduction Henry James is known not only as a novelist but also for his work as literary critic. In his famous essay “The Art of Fiction” (1884), he reacted on a pamphlet that the British author Walter Besant had published under the same title earlier that year. In fact, a discussion and controversy on the novel had already been started in 1882 with Howells' “Henry James Jr.” and Stevenson's “A Gossip of Romance”. James used the opportunity to present his ideas on the novel of fiction: “A novel is in its broadest definition a personal, a direct impression of life” 1. It is very important for him to stress that life is personally -and therefore subjectively- received by an author who than tries to represent life in his2 work. James offers in his essay various new aspects that a novelist should be aware of and make use of if he wants to write a realistic and true novel. This essay deals with the novel What Maisie knew (first published in 1897) which is one of the less known and less studied novels written by Henry James. Critics see it as a work in which James has left the `mainstream literature ́ that the literary market asked for and has realised some of his ideas he had coped with in theory already in the 1880’s when he wrote “The Art of Fiction”. Most of these critics have studied the morality in What Maisie knew and the innovation to present the story from a child’s consciousness. This essay is not interested in the moral aspect of the novel but raises the question if Henry James put into practise his own theory when he wrote Maisie more than ten years after his “Art of Fiction”. After presenting the main arguments of James’ theory, I will scrutinise whether James really has put his theory into practice. Most attention will be turned to his ideas of a realistic writing, looking not only at the aspect of how to write a realistic novel but also of how to create a realistic atmosphere. This essay will try to prove that Henry James did practise his own preaching at least to a certain degree in What Maisie knew and show where James' realistic fiction might reach its limits.

What is Truth?
Title : What is Truth?
Author : John M. Rist
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
Total pages: N.A pages
This book studies the nature, growth and prospects of Roman Catholic culture, viewed as capable of appropriating all that is noble both from internal and external sources. John Rist tests his argument via a number of avenues: man's creation in the image of God and historical difficulties about incorporating women into that vision; the relationship between God's mercy and justice; the possibility of Christian aesthetics; the early development of the see of Rome as the source of an indispensable doctrinal unity for Christian culture; the search for the proper role of the Church in politics. He also argues that such an understanding of Catholic culture is necessary if contemporary assumptions about inalienable rights and the value of the human person are to be defended. The alternatives are a value-free, individualist universe on the one hand, and a fundamentalist denial of human nature and of history on the other.

It seems at times unthinkable that a book like this would have to be written, although, I am relatively sure that Aldous Huxley foresaw its necessity, when he wrote Brave New World. But, the time has arrived where babies are manufactured in sterile facilities and tested for their fitness for life in the world. While we have not yet advanced sufficiently in biological sciences to entirely forego natural gestation in favor of prenatal programming process which Huxley describes, we have reached the point where those unwanted embryos are: set aside; freeze dried; and abandoned or destroyed when they do not meet the standard set for a child. This book affirms the intrinsic goodness of the life of each embryo and explores from the Catholic perspective the possibility of frozen embryo rescue by adoption. It looks at those arguments, which see the elements of in vitro fertilization as so contrary to the faith and the natural law as to be irrecoverably intrinsically evil, and rejects those in favor of a small and narrow path of adoption to fully re-incorporate a child, through the love of a mother and a father, into the society which abandoned it.
