Laws Harsh As Tigers

Title : Laws Harsh As Tigers
Author : Lucy E. Salyer
Publisher: Univ of North Carolina Press
Total pages: 360 pages
ISBN: 9780807864319

Focusing primarily on the exclusion of the Chinese, Lucy Salyer analyzes the popular and legal debates surrounding immigration law and its enforcement during the height of nativist sentiment in the early twentieth century. She argues that the struggles between Chinese immigrants, U.S. government officials, and the lower federal courts that took place around the turn of the century established fundamental principles that continue to dominate immigration law today and make it unique among branches of American law. By establishing the centrality of the Chinese to immigration policy, Salyer also integrates the history of Asian immigrants on the West Coast with that of European immigrants in the East. Salyer demonstrates that Chinese immigrants and Chinese Americans mounted sophisticated and often-successful legal challenges to the enforcement of exclusionary immigration policies. Ironically, their persistent litigation contributed to the development of legal doctrines that gave the Bureau of Immigration increasing power to counteract resistance. Indeed, by 1924, immigration law had begun to diverge from constitutional norms, and the Bureau of Immigration had emerged as an exceptionally powerful organization, free from many of the constraints imposed upon other government agencies.

When one of their own is kidnapped, the washed-up MI5 operatives of Slough House—the Slow Horses, as they're known—outwit rogue agents at the very highest levels of British Intelligence, and even to Downing Street itself. London: Slough House is the MI5 branch where disgraced operatives are reassigned after they’ve messed up too badly to be trusted with real intelligence work. The “Slow Horses,” as the failed spies of Slough House are called, are doomed to spend the rest of their careers pushing paper, but they all want back in on the action. When one of their own is kidnapped and held for ransom, the agents of Slough House must defeat the odds, overturning all expectations of their competence, to breach the top-notch security of MI5’s intelligence headquarters, Regent’s Park, and steal valuable intel in exchange for their comrade’s safety. The kidnapping is only the tip of the iceberg, however—the agents uncover a larger web of intrigue that involves not only a group of private mercenaries but the highest authorities in the Secret Service. After years spent as the lowest on the totem pole, the Slow Horses suddenly find themselves caught in the midst of a conspiracy that threatens not only the future of Slough House, but of MI5 itself.

Title : The Good, the Bad, & the Ugly: Detroit Tigers
Author : George Cantor
Publisher: Triumph Books
Total pages: 192 pages
ISBN: 1600780520

Genuine fans take the best team moments with the less than great, and know that the games that are best forgotten make the good moments truly shine. This monumental book of the Detroit Tigers documents all the best moments and personalities in the history of the team, but also unmasks the regrettably awful and the unflinchingly ugly. In entertaining—and unsparing—fashion, this book sparkles with Tigers highlights and lowlights, from wonderful and wacky memories to the famous and infamous. Such moments include the impressive run to the World Series in 2006 and the clutch hitting of Kirk Gibson in 1984, as well as the horrendous years when the Tigers were in the cellar of their division and the particularly disastrous 2003 season. Whether providing fond memories, goose bumps, or laughs, this portrait of the team is sure to appeal to the fan who has been through it all.

Deep in the jungles of India, nature lived as the Creator intended. Yes, there were those who were predator and those who were prey. But balance was maintained, and the symmetry of Life's plan would take your breath away. Then Man came to the jungle. Taking all and leaving nothing, this new King of the Beasts left naught but death and destruction in his wake. Jungles burned, fear took hold, and both the hunter and hunted died in what could only be called the Great Slaughter. There were no more rainbows for anyone. Tiggra and his mate, Clairese, two Royal Bengal tigers, must find a way to survive in this new world, a world where animalkind is swept aside by these "killers," or face the ultimate end for anyone who can not adapt...extinction.

Tigers In Red Weather

Title : Tigers In Red Weather
Author : Ruth Padel
Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing USA
Total pages: 448 pages
ISBN: 9780802718549

Poet, writer, and descendant of Charles Darwin, Ruth Padel set out to visit a tropical jungle and wildlife sanctuary in India-- and her visit turned into a remarkable two-year journey through eleven countries in search of that most elusive and most beautiful animal: the tiger. Armed with her grandmother's opera glasses and Tunisian running shoes, she set off across Asia to ask the question: can the tiger be saved from extinction in the wild? Tigers are an "umbrella species", they need everything in the forest to work in tandem: they eat deer, the deer need vegetation, the vegetation has to be pollinated by birds, mammals, rodents and butterflies. If you save the tiger, you save everything else. Today, the 5,000 tigers that still survive in the wild live only in Asia and are scattered throughout 14 countries. Padel says that while tigers will never become extinct-they are too popular for that-they may disappear from the wild. There are as many tigers in cages in the US as there are surviving tigers in the wild. As she travels she meets the defenders of the wild-the heroic scientists, forest guards and conservationists at the frontline, fighting to save tigers and their forests from destruction in the places where poverty threatens to wipe out all wildlife. She also examines her fascination (both as a poet and as the great-great-granddaughter of Charles Darwin) with nature, wildness and survival and in the end, becomes a knowledgeable advocate for the tiger. The result is a beautiful blend of natural history, travel literature and memoir, and a searing, intimate portrait of an animal we have loved and feared almost to extinction.

Tigers Confidential

Title : Tigers Confidential
Author : Andy Van Slyke,Jim Hawkins
Publisher: Triumph Books
Total pages: 256 pages
ISBN: 1617499021

Former MLB All-Star and Gold Glove winner Andy Van Slyke, now the first-base coach of the Detroit Tigers, takes you into the dugout, the clubhouse, and onto the field throughout the 2008 season to give you a rare inside look at the most highly anticipated season in the Tigers' storied 108-year history-day by day, game by game, as it actually unfolded. The book combines Van Slyke's insightful, introspective, sometimes humorous diary from the dugout and the playing field with veteran baseball writer Jim Hawkins' view from the press box in real time as the games actually occurred. Each entry is made without the benefit of hindsight, not knowing what the next game or the next day would bring. Stand beside Van Slyke in the first-base coach's box and sit beside him in the dugout to feel the emotions rise and fall with each win and each loss, as the Detroit Tigers, preseason favorites to win the 2008 American League pennant with their franchise-record $139 million payroll, deal with the daily grind of the 162-game season.

Baghelkhand, Or, the Tigers' Lair

Title : Baghelkhand, Or, the Tigers' Lair
Author : David E. U. Baker
Publisher: Oxford University Press
Total pages: 345 pages
ISBN:

This book explores the concept of "region" and "nation" in Indian history through a long-term study of Bagelkhand - from prehistory up to 1956. It examines the ways in which the region eventually became part of the Indian nation (1947) and then the state of Madhya Pradesh (1956). The author sees region building as a process encompassing a dialogue between the region and external, often centralizing states on the one hand and migration on the other. While these two forces gave the region its distinct identity, they also paradoxically forged political, social, and economic commonalities with other regions of the country subject to similar influences. He pursues the theme of nation building from prehistory, through the centralizing Mauryan, Bupta, Mughal, British Empires to the Indian state. The book assesses the social, economic, and political impact of various colonialisms, rather than merely that of Britain, whose very difference colonialism was part of worldwide capitalism. It examines the regional aspects of power, which opposed but fell before the centralizing initiatives. Illustrated with rare visuals, this book would appeal to historians, political scientists, sociologists and anthropologists particularly those concerned with concepts like "region" and "nation."
