Faking It: The Quest for Authenticity in Popular Music

Title : Faking It: The Quest for Authenticity in Popular Music
Author : Hugh Barker,Yuval Taylor
Publisher: W. W. Norton & Company
Total pages: 400 pages
ISBN: 0393089177

Musicians strive to “keep it real”; listeners condemn “fakes”; ... but does great music really need to be authentic? Did Elvis sing from the heart, or was he just acting? Were the Sex Pistols more real than disco? Why do so many musicians base their approach on being authentic, and why do music buffs fall for it every time? By investigating this obsession in the last century through the stories of John Lennon, Kurt Cobain, Jimmie Rodgers, Donna Summer, Leadbelly, Neil Young, Moby, and others, Faking It rethinks what makes popular music work. Along the way, the authors discuss the segregation of music in the South, investigate the predominance of self-absorption in modern pop, reassess the rebellious ridiculousness of rockabilly and disco, and delineate how the quest for authenticity has not only made some music great and some music terrible but also shaped in a fundamental way the development of popular music in our time.

An edgy, realistic debut novel praised by the New York Times bestselling author of Between Shades of Gray, Ruta Sepetys, as “a beautiful reminder that amid our broken pieces we can truly find ourselves.” Alexi Littrell hasn’t told anyone what happened to her over the summer by her backyard pool. Instead, she hides in her closet, counts the slats in the air vent, and compulsively scratches the back of her neck, trying to make the outside hurt more than the inside does—and deal with the trauma. When Bodee Lennox—“the Kool-Aid Kid”—moves in with the Littrells after a family tragedy, Alexi discovers an unlikely friend in this quiet, awkward boy who has secrets of his own. As their friendship grows, Alexi gives him the strength to deal with his past, and Bodee helps her summon the courage to find her voice and speak up about the rape that has changed the course of her life.

Nasca pots, Quimbaya figurines, Moche porn figures, stone shamans. Fakes and forgeries run rampant in the Andean art collections of international museums and private individuals. Authors Karen Bruhns and Nancy Kelker examine the phenomenon in this eye-opening volume. They discuss the most commonly forged classes and styles of artifacts, many of which were being duplicated as early as the 19th century. More important, they describe the system whereby these objects get made, purchased, authenticated, and placed in major museums as well as the complicity of forgers, dealers, curators, and collectors in this system. Unique to this volume are biographies of several of the forgers, who describe their craft and how they are able to effectively fool connoisseurs and specialists. This is an important accessible introduction to pre-Columbian art fraud for archaeologists, art historians, and museum professionals alike. A parallel volume by the same authors discusses fakes in Mesoamerican archaeology.

How To Swindle by Faking Science then you are going read what is the mother of all the conspiracies in science, which is about how science applies mind control by processing thought control. This is the truth! Science practicing physics about Astronomy, Cosmology and everything to do with Stars, the Cosmos or Universe, Galactica is under a Conspiracy to hide and conceal the truth...Does this sound far-fetched - I challenge you to read this book and then still think it is far fetched. Read what science hides and I prove every word. This book reveals what Science in Physics concerning Astronomy, Cosmology hides for hundreds of years. You read how science swindles to make Newton seem truthful and every time they find out how nature works nature destroys Newtonian concepts completely. This is the a conspiracy... For the first time in history I prove gravity is P. But if science was as unblemished and perfect as physicists say it is then my work has no place to be. This then is the attitude in science about my work. To counter that claim I prove that there is a mother conspiracy in place about covering the misconceptions hidden under a cloak of false lily-white purity and truthfulness. To hide Newton's in defendable incorrectness science created a mother conspiracy, which I reveal. There is a mother conspiracy hiding mistakes in place. Science benefits from and build upon this mother conspiracy being in place while I can't get further with my work while it is in place. It's imbedded in the teaching and learning process students undergo in learning Newtonian dogma. Students are brainwashed by the instigation of mind control that forces students to accept the dogma.I prove gravity has value of P, still by keeping me quiet I am perverted to introduce a new cosmic vision showing how the Universe forms when enlisting the four phenomena. How it works in science is Newton gets undeserved unduly credit in discrediting nature. I show how singularity takes on every shape and space we know. Are you up to facing the truth about what you thought is more righteous than God? Read this and see what those in science hide to make them seem so surreal?

If you’ve ever been given empty clichés during challenging times, you know how painful it can feel to be misunderstood by well-meaning people. Far too often, it seems the response we get to our hurt and disappointment is to suck it up, or pray it away. But Scripture reveals a God who meets us where we are, not where we pretend to be. No More Faking Fine is your invitation to get gut-level honest with God through the life-giving language of lament. Lament, a practice woven throughout Scripture, is a prayer that God never ignores, never silences, and never wastes. As author Esther Fleece says, “Lament is the unexpected pathway to true intimacy with God, and with those around us.” Esther learned this the hard way, by believing she could shut down painful emotions that haunted her from a broken past she tried to forget on her fast track to success. But in silencing her pain, she robbed herself of the opportunity to be healed. Maybe you’ve done the same. No More Faking Fine is your permission to lament—to give voice to the hurt, frustration, and disappointment you’ve kept inside and silenced for too long. Drawing from careful biblical study and hard-won insight, Esther reveals how to use God’s own language to draw closer to Him as He leads us through any darkness into His marvelous light.

There's Gwen, the matriarch who sedates herself with double-crostics and double vodkas, Eve the oldest daughter who has a slight identity problem (she has two), and Nadine, the granddaughter who's ready to follow in the family footsteps as soon as she can find a set that isn't leading off a cliff. Holding everyone together is Matilda, the youngest daughter, who's inherited the secret locked down in the basement of the Goodnight Gallery, the secret that she's willing to do almost anything to keep, including break into a house in the dead of night to steal back her past. Meet the Dempseys, or at least meet Davy, a reformed con man who's just been ripped off for a cool three million by his financial manager, who then gallantly turned it over to Clea Lewis, the most beautiful sociopath Davy ever slept with. Davy wants the money back, but more than that he'll do anything to keep Clea from winning, including break into her house in the dead of night to steal back his future. One collision in a closet later, Tilda and Davy reluctantly join forces to combat Clea, suspicious art collectors, a disgruntled heir, and an exasperated hitman, all the while coping with a mutant dachshund, a juke box stuck in the sixties, questionable sex, a painting of three evil fisherman closing in on a dyspeptic tuna, multiple personalities, miscellaneous Goodnights and Dempseys, and the growing realization that they can't turn their backs on the people they were meant to be...or the people they were born to love. Weber provides an invigorating analysis of U.S. foreign policy in Latin America through the lens of queer theory, one that is certain to spark controversy and debate. She probes popular ideas of how the United States is personified, arguing that a degree of queerness is both absent and present in these perceptions. Weber critically engages the popular image of American culture. Reviewing U.S. military interventions in Latin America from 1959 to 1994, Weber posits that American foreign policy is a set of strategic displacements of castration anxiety. She brilliantly illuminates the cultural anxieties and imperatives that shape foreign policy. Utilizing humor and critical logic, she provides a fascinating perspective on American foreign relations in the Caribbean.

Making and Faking Kinship

Title : Making and Faking Kinship
Author : Caren Freeman
Publisher: Cornell University Press
Total pages: 280 pages
ISBN: 0801462827

In the years leading up to and directly following rapprochement with China in 1992, the South Korean government looked to ethnic Korean (Chosǒnjok) brides and laborers from northeastern China to restore productivity to its industries and countryside. South Korean officials and the media celebrated these overtures not only as a pragmatic solution to population problems but also as a patriotic project of reuniting ethnic Koreans after nearly fifty years of Cold War separation. As Caren Freeman's fieldwork in China and South Korea shows, the attempt to bridge the geopolitical divide in the name of Korean kinship proved more difficult than any of the parties involved could have imagined. Discriminatory treatment, artificially suppressed wages, clashing gender logics, and the criminalization of so-called runaway brides and undocumented workers tarnished the myth of ethnic homogeneity and exposed the contradictions at the heart of South Korea's transnational kin-making project. Unlike migrant brides who could acquire citizenship, migrant workers were denied the rights of long-term settlement, and stringent quotas restricted their entry. As a result, many Chosǒnjok migrants arranged paper marriages and fabricated familial ties to South Korean citizens to bypass the state apparatus of border control. Making and Faking Kinship depicts acts of "counterfeit kinship," false documents, and the leaving behind of spouses and children as strategies implemented by disenfranchised people to gain mobility within the region's changing political economy.
