Outsoaring the Shadow: Atheistic thoughts on life and death

Author : Martin Rushton

The day will come when the Sun rises but you do not: your last breath will have been made. This is a stark fact. Do you think the day will never come? Do you conduct your life on the presumption that it will not come? But it will come; it is part of the script of life. It may even come today. How does an atheist answer the perennial existential question 'What is the meaning of life?' In this sobering but ultimately compassionate and optimistic book, the author offers a helping hand. Combining elements of ancient Stoic philosophy, academic argumentation, contemplative practices, practical advice and, at times, dark humour, the author weaves a coherent and sympathetic guide to the art of living in the face of mortal angst.

The Metaphysics of Death

Author : John Martin Fischer

This collection of seventeen essays deals with the metaphysical, as opposed to the moral issues pertaining to death. For example, the authors investigate (among other things) the issue of what makes death a bad thing for an individual, if indeed death is a bad thing. This issue is more basic and abstract than such moral questions as the particular conditions under which euthanasia is justified, if it is ever justified. Though there are important connections between the more abstract questions addressed in this book and many contemporary moral issues, such as euthanasia, suicide, and abortion, the primary focus of this book is on metaphysical issues concerning the nature of death: What is the nature of the harm or bad involved in death? (If it is not pain, wha is it, and how can it be bad?) Who is the subject of the harm or bad? (if the person is no longer alive, how can he be the subject of the bad? An if he is not the subject, who is? Can one have harm with no subject?) When does the harm take place? (Can a harm take place after its subject ceases to exist? If death harms a person, can the harm take place before the death occurs?) If death can be a bad thing, would immorality be a desirable alternative? This family of questions helps to fram ethe puzzle of why--and how--death is bad. Other subjects addressed include the Epicurean view othat death is not a misfortune (for the person who dies); the nature of misfortune and benefit; the meaningulness and value of life; and the distinction between the life of a person and the life of a living creature who is not a person. There is an extensive bibiography that includes science-fiction treatments of death and immorality.

"This collection contains two plays by Gao Xingjian, winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature 2000. Escape was written in 1989 in the wake of the June 4 Student Movement in Tiananmen Square in Beijing. With the publication ofo the play, Gao was expelled from the Chinese Communist Party, dismissed from his state appointment and ahd his house in Beijing confiscated. Perhaps because of this controversy, Escape has become the most performed of all of Gao's plays: it has been staged in Sweden, Germany, Belgium, France, Poland, Japan, Ivory Coast, Tunisia, and Canada. Wherever it was staged, it was given a locally relevant intepretation and was well received, which lends credence to Gao's claim of the universality of the play he describes as the tragedy of modern man. The Man Who Questions Death is the latest of Gao's plays. It is also one of the most exciting and powerful." -- Book jacket.

Life Before Death
Title : Life Before Death
Author : Lawrence Meredith
Publisher: Green Dragon Books
Total pages: 272 pages
Lawrence Meredith writes with one question in mind: What constitutes life before death? The Hindus teach that there is life before life. So do the Mormons and the primal-scream therapists. The Muslims teach that there is life after death, and so does just about anybody else who's willing to be called religious. Meredith argues that these views are "felonious." We have the responsibility, he writes, to live life in the here-and-now and seek to experience our own religion of the body. Defining and exploring the different stages of the body is key to understanding Life Before Death: -The body as God -The body as Christ -The body as spirit -The body as dance -The body as play -The body as mortal What readers are saying about this book: It takes no courage to say one is a Christian, but it takes great courage to be a Christian. It takes no courage to say one is a writer, but it takes great courage to be a writer and write so others can comprehend the content. Larry Meredith, in Life Before Death, shows that he has enormous courage. After finishing this book, the reader is more prepared to face death and even more prepared to face life. - Maya Angelou, Author Life Before Death reminds us of the value of our todays, the here and now, and the joys to be savored one day at a time, one victory at a time, one championship at a time. And when Life is the ultimate championship, we don't need 'just a little bit more.' - Cedric Dempsey, President, NCAA Meredith's vision is kaleidoscopic, and his supreme revelation is that 'the Word made flesh' is a vital form of Amazing Grace - Earle Labor, Ph.D., Wilson Professor of American Literature and Director of the Jack London Research Center

Here are just a few of the spiritual truths that the author has found to be constant, that are included in "The Circle of Life and Death," to assist you on this journey. It is love in one form or another that is the binding attraction that propels creation forward in the progression of the soul through life and death. Life and death should be viewed not as two separate experiences but as one continuous progression repeated over and over. The continuation of the consciousness of our soul is assured as we progress through each lifetime and death. Our purpose in each life is to gain experiences that will awaken us to a higher consciousness, the spark of God within us. This is the driving force that propels each individual soul through the cycle of reincarnation. Heaven and Hell are not physical or geographical places, but states of consciousness needed to analyze and evaluate past earthly experiences in the after-life. They are not permanent conditions. Karrasch hopes each individual will be guided to find his or her own spiritual path with the assistance of the concepts and practical strategies presented in this fascinating introductory guide- book. You do not need to abandon all your religious beliefs to embark on this life-changing journey while you keep God as your "constant companion."

Some people wait for death. Some people experience it unexpectedly. Others force it, and most of us, at one time or another, have contemplated what happens after death. It is one of the great mysteries of life. My encounter with death was remarkable. Some of it was hellish and distressing. Most of it was enlightening and wonderful. The most incredible experience was the changes it made in me afterward. It was a powerful guide for how I should live my life now. I know that the scientific circle of people have many rationalizations and a variety of biological explanations to answer the sensation of leaving one's body, moving toward the light, and being encircled by overwhelming feelings of euphoria and love. They attribute these sensations to the effects of oxygen deprivation, abnormal brain function, and drugs or medication. But when you have been there and done that, it is not that easy to explain away these phenomena.
